Map of Azerbaijan showing Oguz rayon

Oghuz (Azerbaijani: Oğuz) is a rayon (administrative division, equivalent of English county) of Azerbaijan. In the 19th century the population of the region consisted of Muslims (Azerbaijanis and some Dagestani people), which were the largest community in the region, as well as Jews, Udis and Armenians. Following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict of late 1980s, the Azerbaijanis expelled the Armenians from Vartashen (Armenian: Վարդաշեն) as part of forceful population exchange between the two countries and changed the name to Oguz.[1] The capital, also renamed Oğuz, maintains two attractive old churches (one now a museum) and two active synagogues. Several villages in the district including Chinarli near Qum are home to Tsakhur-speaking people.[citation needed]
