Romancing SaGa (ロマンシング サ・ガ Romanshingu Sa Ga?) is a console role-playing game developed by Square (Squaresoft) (now Square Enix). The original Super Famicom version, released on January 28, 1992, and the WonderSwan Color port, released on December 20, 2001, were marketed exclusively in Japan. It is the first game in the SaGa series to be released for the Super Famicom and the fourth installment in that series. Square Enix announced a PlayStation 2 enhanced remake titled Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song (ロマンシング サガ -ミンストレルソング- Romanshingu Sa Ga -Minsutoreru Songu-?) for both Japanese and North American localization. The Japanese version was released on April 21, 2005 and the North American version was released on October 11, 2005 and was simply known as Romancing SaGa, which was used to coincide with the Super Famicom's original title.

Plot

Setting

Romancing SaGa is set in the fictional world of Mardias, in which several races exist:

  • Giants: Giants from Ancient Mardias that have hidden themselves away after the War of the Gods.
  • Terranites: The Early humans created by Nisa; they are not meant to fight, and reside underground to be close to Nisa.
  • Taralians: Terranites who went to the surface.
  • Gecklings: Lizardfolk whose souls were fostered by Saruin: he taught them to walk and fight. However, they chose not to fight for him and live their lives on Walon Isle (in one town on the island, Humans and Gecklings live in peace together).
  • Humans: The most prominent race in Mardias. Created by Elore using the Taralians as a model design for them. They are divided into many sub races and cultures: Kjari, Valhallans, Rosalians, and Bafal Nationals are the most known.
  • Elementals: Adyllis, Ruler of Earth; Avi, Master of Wind; Pyrix, Lord of Flame and Strom, Serpent of Water

Characters

All eight main characters grew up in different places, have different backgrounds, and are journeying for different reasons. While playing one of these characters, the player might run into some of the other seven as they adventure across Mardias and lean more about their stories.

Beside the eight main characters, there are a number of recruitable characters, ranging from anonymous soldiers to major players in the game's plot and sub-plots. Such characters are mostly found in pubs, although a few can join the player during specific quests.

Story

Mardias was created by the God Marda. Long ago, war raged between three wicked gods, Death, Saruin, and Schirach, and the lord of all gods, Elore. At the end of that long conflict, Death and Schirach were stripped of their powers, and Saruin was imprisoned through the might of the ten Fatestones and the hero Mirsa's ultimate sacrifice. A millennium had passed, and the Fatestones were scattered throughout Mardias. All this time the powers of evil festered, bent on releasing Saruin from his prison.

Development

WonderSwan Color port

Romancing SaGa was ported to the Bandai WonderSwan Color handheld in 2001. Due to memory restrictions, not all of the game's planned material made it into the Super Famicom version. This material was re-added to the WonderSwan Color version.[1]

Reception

The Super Famicom version of Romancing SaGa has sold over 1.3 million copies worldwide as of March 2003.[2] The game was voted by the readers of Famitsu magazine as the 53rd best video game of all time.[3]

The PlayStation 2 remake sold in excess of 450,000 copies during 2005 in Japan.[4] It was the top-selling game in that country between the weeks of May 2 and May 26, 2005.[5][6] Minstrel's Song was given a 32 out of 40 by Famitsu magazine.[7] It was re-released under the Ultimate Hits label in 2006.[8]
