Ss is a digraph used in Pinyin to write the sound /z/ in languages such as Yi. In other languages, such as French and Central Alaskan Yup'ik, where s transcribes /z/ between vowels (and elsewhere in the case of Yup'ik), ss is used for /s/ in that position. In romanized Korean, it represents the fortis sound /s͈/.
