WKAV is a Sports formatted broadcast radio station affiliated with Fox Sports Radio.
WKAV is licensed to Charlottesville, Virginia, serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. WKAV is owned and operated by Monticello Media.
History
During the 1960s and 1970s, the station had been Top 40 WELK , originally at 1010 KHz, where they used the slogan "Where The Tens Come Together". WELK moved to its present 1400 KHz frequency in the early 1970s. Nationally syndicated radio host Dick Bartley worked at WELK during the early seventies.
On January 7, 1980, the call letters changed to WXAM, and finally on March 19, 1984 the call letters became WKAV. During the 1980s and 1990s, the station slowly evolved from a music format to a talk format and finally to its present sports format.
Sale
On July 10th, 2007, VARTV.com reported that Kalil and Company Inc announced that it brokered a deal for Clear Channel to sell its entire Charlottesville cluster to George Reed's Sistema 102 LLC for $7.75 Million. Sistema 102 LLC changed it's name to Monticello Media on September 1st, 2007.
