Battle Royal directly means "Battle": a fight (as entertainment), "Royal": fit for the royalty. It is referred to as a match between more than two combatants that fight to the death in what is known as a deathmatch, or until "the last man standing" where the last combatant standing wins. A common example is the Gladiator fights in the Roman Games, but this predates the term. The misuse of the term refers to: chaotic, anarchy, cacophony.
